Cleaning Debris – Beirut Explosion Intervention

CLEANING DEBRIS (5 August 2020 – 4 September 2020)

A large number of USJ volunteers acted immediately and went on the ground in Beirut to help clean streets and tidy houses after the explosion This intervention allowed a significant number of families to return to their homes and paved the way for the mission’s subsequent activity: damage assessment. In collaboration with other NGOs, volunteers also collected broken glass for recycling. In total, 16 tons of glass were collected for recycling. On Tuesday 12th and Wednesday the 13th, USJ volunteers also helped clean the Oriental Library and Monot Street. In collaboration with USJ Club Verte and Fondation Diane, volunteers and members of the club cleaned and sorted debris every Monday and Friday in various streets of Beirut. With the help of Fondation Diane, a truck accompanied volunteers around the city in order to collect plastic, cardboard and nylon bags. The bags were dropped off at the Campus of Medical Sciences, in order for the “USJ en Mission” team to recycle them.
